Overview
The GIP 4.00E-0.40 is a grooving insert from ISCAR's CUT-GRIP system. It cuts a 4.00 mm wide groove with a 0.40 mm corner radius and can reach a maximum cutting depth of 13 mm.
The insert is double-ended: the cutting form is at both ends, so each insert carries two usable cutting edges. That is the defining economy of the GIP-E range — one insert, two ends, indexed by turning the insert over in the pocket rather than replacing it.
Its chipformer is the P type, described by ISCAR as intended for medium-to-high feeds. This is not a light-finishing geometry: the groove form is designed to evacuate a chip at a productive feed rate in a 4 mm wide slot.
Grade IC428 is a hard substrate with a multilayer CVD coating, and ISCAR recommends it for grey and nodular cast iron at moderate to high cutting speeds. It is a cast-iron grade — not a general steel grade.
Grade IC428 — Read This Before Ordering
The single most common mistake on this insert is ordering IC428 for steel because the GIP family is usually associated with grooving steel parts.
IC428 is specified for cast iron. ISCAR's grade data lists a hard substrate with a multilayer CVD coating, recommended for grey and nodular cast iron at moderate to high cutting speeds. If the workpiece is carbon steel, alloy steel or stainless, the same insert designation exists in a PVD grade intended for steel — ordering IC428 will give poor life and unpredictable chip control.
The insert geometry is the same across grades; the grade decides what material the insert can survive in.
Key Features
- 4.00 mm cutting width — a wide grooving form for O-ring grooves, retaining-ring grooves and wide relief grooves.
- R0.4 corner radius — sharp enough for groove corners, still robust at the root.
- Max cutting depth 13 mm (CDX) — deep enough for most shaft and housing grooves.
- Double-ended — 2 cutting edges — index by reversing the insert, not by replacing it.
- P chipformer, medium-to-high feeds — productive chip evacuation, not a finishing-only geometry.
- 7° clearance angle — standard CUT-GRIP geometry for straight grooving.
- IC428 CVD grade — hard substrate, multilayer coating, for grey and nodular cast iron at moderate to high speed.

Reading the Designation
GIP 4.00 E -0.40 IC428
| Element | Meaning |
| GIP | CUT-GRIP grooving insert, precision double-ended |
| 4.00 | Cutting width 4.00 mm |
| E | Insert style code within the GIP range |
| -0.40 | Corner radius 0.40 mm |
| IC428 | Grade — not a dimension |
The two numbers are not interchangeable. 4.00 is the groove width; 0.40 is the corner radius. A GIP 4.00E-0.80is the same 4 mm groove with a 0.8 mm radius — a different item at a different price.
Applications
- O-ring and retaining-ring grooves on shafts and housings
- Wide relief grooves and undercuts
- Grooving cast iron components: pump housings, motor bodies, gearbox parts, brake components
- Face grooving where the holder and groove diameter allow
- Production grooving where two edges per insert reduces tool changes
Less suitable for:
- carbon, alloy or stainless steel — use the PVD steel grade of the same designation;
- parting off — a parting blade and a narrower insert are the correct tools;
- grooves narrower than 4 mm — the width is fixed by the insert, not by the program;
- deep grooves beyond 13 mm — a different GIP size is required.
Holders and Setup
- Requires an ISCAR CUT-GRIP holder for GIP 4.00 inserts. ISCAR's own catalogue pairs this insert class with holders such as GHDR 25-4.
- Check the holder's hand (right/left) against the spindle direction and the side of the groove being machined.
- Groove depth capacity depends on both the insert (13 mm CDX) and the holder's reach; on small part diameters the part geometry limits depth before the insert does.
- Confirm the clamping screw and wrench for the holder before shipping inserts alone.
Cutting Data Note
The published figures for this insert are geometric: 4.00 mm width, R0.4, 13 mm maximum depth, 7° clearance, with a P chipformer rated for medium-to-high feeds. Cutting speed is not stated on this page because it depends on the cast iron grade, hardness, part rigidity and coolant. Confirm vc for the specific iron before production and treat the first part as a trial.
Packing and Ordering
- Order by full designation: GIP 4.00E-0.40 IC428 (Iscar catalog no. 6401776)
- Always state the grade — the identical insert is supplied in several grades, and IC428 is the cast iron one.
- Confirm the packing quantity on the actual packing list; ISCAR inserts are commonly supplied in 5 or 10 piece boxes depending on the item.
FAQ
How wide is the groove?
4.00 mm — fixed by the insert.
What is the maximum grooving depth?
13 mm (CDX), subject to the holder and part diameter.
How many edges?
Two. The insert is double-ended.
Can it cut steel?
Not with IC428. The same designation is available in PVD steel grades; IC428 is specified for grey and nodular cast iron.
Does it need a special holder?
Yes — an ISCAR CUT-GRIP holder for GIP 4.00 inserts, for example GHDR 25-4. The insert cannot be used on its own.
Is R0.4 the groove width?
No. 0.40 mm is the corner radius; the width is 4.00 mm.
